Requirement First
Define the public issue before collecting: policy, procurement, public violence, censorship, corruption, exploitation, data misuse, human-rights abuse, or a public institutional claim. Purpose decides what to collect and what to ignore.
Preserve Volatile Evidence Carefully
Online material changes, disappears, and gets edited. Preserve source, date seen, archive status, hash or integrity note when appropriate, transformation, translation, and uncertainty without overpublishing private details.
Use A Verification Stack
Separate primary records, direct media, official statements, independent reporting, expert analysis, community leads, and inference. Corroborate with timelines, geospatial context, provenance, and source notes before publication.
Match The Persona Need
Journalists need verification and explainability; human-rights researchers need trauma-informed minimization; legal contexts need audit trails; corporate teams need integration; volunteers need training and boundaries.
AI Is Triage, Not Proof
AI can summarize, cluster, translate, transcribe, or suggest entity matches, but it can hallucinate, flatten context, and obscure provenance. Human review and reproducible notes remain required.
Publish The Minimum Necessary
The strongest OSINT proves the public point while cutting addresses, minors, victims, unrelated identifiers, private beliefs, credentials, and spectacle that adds risk without evidentiary value.
